FGUI are delighted to announce Ronan Lynagh as their Team Captain for the upcoming season and the 2021 Four Nations Tournament. Lynagh, a former Irish National Champion, will lead a squad of 22 as Team Ireland prepare to take on the very best from England, Scotland and Wales over the weekend of August 14/15, at Pococke Footgolf Course in Kilkenny.

“It’s an honour to be asked to captain my country. It’s not an easy time for people of course, and hopefully this is something we can look forward to preparing and competing for, safely and successfully, as the CV-19 response progresses. I’m really excited for a National Tour here in Ireland and the quality of the competition it creates.  I can only see it bringing out the very best in players from all over the island to compete for the chance to represent Ireland against the quality that will undoubtedly come from the English, the Scottish and the Welsh.”

Lynagh, who has competed for Ireland at the World Cup in Argentina in 2016 and represented his country in 6-a-side football in 2018, thinks there are real chances for newer players in Ireland to make their mark at the competition.  “I think the National Tour and qualifying criteria gives a great opportunity for newer players to get involved and find their way into the squad, particularly those in the Amateur, Junior, Ladies, and Senior categories (45+).”

The Four Nations Footgolf Tournament will see a Ryder-Cup style series of matches, with some of Europe’s top players in the mix across two days later this year.  “For many sports people, representing their country playing a sport they enjoy is a huge deal.  Throw in the opportunity to go up against our international neighbours in a team competition, and it can really bring out the best in people.  We look forward to welcoming the teams from England, Scotland, and Wales to Kilkenny in August for what has the makings of a top weekend of International Footgolf, and wish them all well in the National Tours between now and then.”
The FGUI National Tour will be announced in the coming weeks, and will begin in March – Government Guidelines permitting. Follow FGUI on Facebook and Instagram for more information.
